At Turnbull & Co, we want to celebrate women! This year’s International Women’s Day theme is ‘Embrace Equity’ which we believe is a theme we all can get behind.
Around 16% of the construction workforce in the UK is female; however, at Turnbull women makeup, 29% of our workforce is made up of women across a range of traditional and non-traditional roles. This number is also growing as we strive to recruit more women across all sectors of our business. Turnbull embraces the individual needs of all its employees and recognises that everyone’s individuality unites us.
There is work to do across all industries to promote and encourage women in the workplace; after the Covid pandemic (in 2020) The number of employed women declined by 54 million with 45 million women leaving the labour market altogether.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is Equity vs Equality.
Equality gives everyone the same resources across the board, regardless of their circumstances or needs.
Equity recognises that each person has different circumstances and needs, meaning people need different resources and opportunities accessible to them in order to thrive.
Here’s what some of the women at Turnbull’s had to say on the theme:

Do think Turnbull recognises the difference between Equity and Equality?
I whole heartly believe Turnbull recognises the difference between Equity & Equality.
Starting my role at Turnbull, it would have been a breath of fresh air to work for a company who simply to recognises Equality. But in my experience, Turnbull goes that one step further. They recognise we are people first, and importantly; that every person is different. As staff, no matter of gender, we all have different hobbies, interests, strengths, weaknesses, hopes, and aspirations. And just as we have our own individual interests, strengths, and aspirations, Turnbull recognises the need to not only embrace these differences but to celebrate them!
What have we done for you to feel the Equity?
At Turnbull, much like wider society, there isn’t one single action or decision that management or policy makers can introduce that will make marginalised or minority groups feel Equity. Instead, it’s in the small (and often times simple) daily interactions which build over time to create a wider culture of respect and Equality. An example of this is, being recognised and respected for one’s ability, rather than gender. It’s hearing male team members having the confidence to challenge ‘old school’ gender pre-conceptions that may arise from other staff members or customers. & it’s being given resources and opportunities that suit me best; as a person, and as a woman. At Turnbull, staff are freely given the tools and support we need to succeed. This support, more often than not, looks different for every person, but – importantly – it is given with no matter of race, gender, or creed. Whilst these resources might be tailored to each individual person, what’s important is these opportunities are freely given, and given to all.
What we do with those opportunities is then down to us.
As a Woman in the construction industry do you feel Equity?
Having previously worked for a different builders’ merchants, I have unfortunately experienced feeling unheard and overlooked working in the construction industry. I experienced this not only by my colleagues, but also by customers and senior management. However, in my opinion, this was a result of company culture, rather than a reflection of the construction industry. Upon starting my role at Turnbull, it was an eye-opening experience. Respect was immediately given and not once have I felt what a lot of women experience in male-dominated industries; that I have to complete twice the amount of work compared to my male colleagues in order to be valued and respected in the same way.
The sheer quantity of women in traditionally male-dominated roles such as Plumbing & Heating Trade Counter Sales is a credit to the company and is a reflection of an inclusive company culture that is set up to allow women to succeed and feel a part of the team, in every role. Simply put, if you have the right skill set, are determined, conscientious, and have a passion for your job, there are no limits to any role or opportunities for progression at Turnbull.
Builders Merchants sometimes get a bad rap. People assume they are ‘old school environments, all blokes, lots of banter, and the only woman must be the receptionist. Whilst this may be true for some merchants, Turnbull is proof that things can and should be done differently.
Which other women inspire you?
I am most inspired by my female colleagues. Working women, who balance home life with being strong, competent, and accomplished team members. They consistently drive success for the business. They are caring and collaborative, proving that a woman’s touch adds value to every workplace.

Do think Turnbull recognises the difference between Equity and Equality?
I personally feel Equity and Equality go hand in hand. I like to think it is at the forefront and is now being addressed in the workplace.
What have we done for you to feel the Equity?
I personally have not needed to address any issues but I am sure Turnbull would address them with fairness, impartiality and equality throughout the company. Addressing any individual needs to help them within their workplace.
As a Woman in the construction industry do you feel Equity?
I think women are now very much part of the construction Industry and recognised as such. Giving the same equal opportunities as our male counterparts.
Which other women inspire you?
The woman that inspires me most in the modern age is Margaret Thatcher. Whether you liked her or not. The first Woman PM in the UK, a local lass growing up in a working-class environment following her strong beliefs to reach her ultimate goal!
Here’s to Women!

Do think Turnbull recognises the difference between Equity and Equality?
I definitely feel like Turnbull supports everyone to feel equal, working in a male-oriented industry can be quite daunting but Turnbull has supported me every step of the way and given me every opportunity to grow and learn within the company.
What have we done for you to feel the Equity?
Turnbull supports everyone with whatever they need to help them in their everyday tasks, I don’t feel that I can’t approach my manager with a problem because I know I will be supported. I started working with the company three years ago training to be a customer service and aftersales administrator. In December I was given the opportunity to be a trainee kitchen and bathroom designer, I have been supported through each transition.
As a Woman in the construction industry do you feel Equity?
Yes, being in a male-dominated industry my needs are met and I’m given the same opportunities.
Which other women inspire you?
My mum, no matter what time of day or night my mum is always there to support me and help me and guide me. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without her love and support. Also my manager Olivia has helped me learn my new role and supported me with the transition of roles. Olivia is driven and determined to push the showrooms to the best they can be.
