A new fence is an investment in time, labour and expense you’ll want to protect. Finishing its installation with a coat of fence paint makes sense.
We shine the spotlight on Bird Brand – our top pick for one coat fence paint – and share our tips on choosing the right colour for your outdoor space.

How much fence paint will I need?
Our Bird Brand One Coat Protection Fence & Shed Paint covers seven 6ft x 6ft grey/weathered fence panels from just one 5 litre tin – that’s just over 22 square metres.
If you buy water-based fence paint your brushes can be washed in warm soapy water. But remember, even water-based left over paint should not go down the drain or into watercourses – you’ll need to take it next time you go to your nearest local authority waste facility.
Tips on painting wooden fence panels
- Paint dries better in warm conditions so wait for a good day if possible
- Use a power sprayer if you are short of time
- Use horizontal strokes for overlap panels, and vertical strokes for feather edge panels; basically, follow the direction of the wood grain for the best finish
- Prepare for inevitable splashes – use goggles, gloves and protect any existing plants or paving you don’t want spattered.
Can you use fence paint on decking?
Only if the paint instructions specifically state it can be used in this way.
While it protects the wood against the elements, it’s not formulated to take foot traffic and would not last very long.
A Colour To Suit Every Garden Fence and Shed
Bird Brand Fence & Shed Paint not only offers protection against the elements, but also stands out with an extensive range of colours and its specially formulated oxide pigments provide a semi-opaque finish.
Our guide to choosing a strong, traditional colour for your garden shed or fence
Ebony Black: a classic, traditional colour (strangely enough, black fences ‘disappear’ so a great choice if you want it to blend into the background behind foliage)
Chestnut Brown: warm, rich dark brown to contrast with pale sandstone paving
Medium Oak: a neutral, warm natural brown to coordinate with garden furniture
Red Cedar: a strong, vibrant colour for shady gardens
Forest Green: fresh, natural, and perfect for lifting an urban garden
Looking for a fresh ‘pop’ of colour? Why not consider these contemporary colours for your outdoor space!
Autumn Gold: pairs beautifully with a traditional, rustic garden providing a Mediterranean backdrop to flower beds and neutral paving slabs
Azure Blue: the ultimate accent colour – pair with lush green foliage and bright, light coloured gravel for a striking ,yet laid back sunny vibe
Silver Birch: a sophisticated, neutral grey fence paint colour that’s at home in a modern, contemporary setting
Slate Grey: suits modern and urban style gardens – a great colour that works well with granite, slate, limestone paving and wooden decking
Anthracite Grey: a deep, sophisticated shade suited to contemporary gardens, particularly outdoor spaces that feature bold, colourful plants or wooden decking
